Duane Smith, 81, of Lisle, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 30, 2025.
He was predeceased by his parents, Laura (Swackhammer) and Walter; his infant sister, Glenda; and his daughter, Teresa.
Duane was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy. A lifelong enthusiast of model airplanes, he spent countless hours perfecting his craft—first building his own models from scratch, and more recently enjoying the convenience of prebuilt, ready-to-fly planes. He split his summers between the airfield and the golf course, where he fancied himself a “pro-ish” golfer.
After every fun fly or round of golf, Duane and his beloved wife, Kathy, could often be found grabbing a burger from Burger King or a slushie from Sonic—simple pleasures he never took for granted.
He is survived by his daughters, Kierstin (Jeff) Luschwitz and Jeanenne (Bill) Hall; his grandchildren, Dustin (Cait), Katie (Mont), Kyle (Lindsay), Brandon (Brenda), Allison (Jackie), and Natalie; and eight great-grandchildren.
Also surviving him is Lilly, the little “ankle biter” he never thought he wanted, but who quickly stole his heart. His love for her was no secret—some joked she ranked right up there with his wife and kids along with his brothers & sisters: Dale (Pat) Smith, Romayne Smith, Gerald Smith, Jenny Eiklor, and Laverne Smith.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal services. Those wishing to honor Duane’s memory are encouraged to donate time, food, or funds to the BC Humane Society or an animal rescue organization of their choice.
