Bernard " Bernie" W. Poyer Obituary

Bernard “Bernie” W. Poyer, a loving husband, father to six sons, and a US Air Force veteran died peacefully at home on Tuesday, 19 September following a nine-year battle with cancer (multiple myeloma).  The lifelong Whitney Point, NY resident was 82.

It was during his service in the Air Force while stationed in Bangor, Maine that he met and fell in love with his future wife of 61 years, Annette. He was the “Bean” to Annette’s “Peach”.

Bernie was an enthusiastic hunter (big game and small), fisherman (river, lake, ice, and trout streams, including those in PA with their good friends Tom and Sherry), golfer, bowler, and for a time in the 70s, tennis player and canoe racer.  All of these pursuits he taught and passed down to his sons.  In addition, and to the surprise of many, he also took up country-western dancing (a pastime he and Annette enjoyed together after they retired). Bernie also loved spending time with his family over a friendly (but competitive) game of cards, dominos, darts, ping pong, or pool on the family pool table, as well as going out as a family for ice cream, Dunkin coffee, or breakfast for his usual sausage gravy over biscuits.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents Vern and Wilma, his sister Alice (Bill) McGuire, and brother Howard (Mary).  In addition to his wife Annette, he is survived by his sons Scott (Judy), Dennis, Jeff, Jay (Bonnie), Timothy (Julie), Matthew (Candice), his brother Norman (Elsie), 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

At his request, no services will be held.
