Russell (Rusty) R. Vergason, 56, of Newark Valley, NY, lost his valiant battle with brain cancer on the afternoon of July 15th, 2019, in the peaceful presence of his loving wife, and in the comforting care of Mercy House. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, AnnMarie; two children and their families, Vicki (Kevin) Weber, Erik (Stacy) Vergason with children Olivia and Wyatt; two brothers, Robert (Sharon) Vergason and sons, Gerry (Thomas Hadley) Vergason; along with many cousins and large extended family. Rusty will be cremated and laid to rest at his family home and farm in Newark Valley.
Rusty was a simple kind of guy and was not one for the extravagant things in life. In remembrance of, or in lieu of flowers, Rusty and family has asked that a donation be made to support Mercy House of the Southern Tier of Endicott, a non-profit, hospice assisted, facility supporting families with end of life care for their loved ones.
At this time the family would like to extend a special, and sincere, Thank You for the support, care, and love that has been extended to them over the last year by the following organizations – UHS Wilson Medical Center & UHS Medical Oncology Center of Johnson City; Sock Out Cancer of Binghamton; Newark Valley Fire Department; Mercy House of the Southern Tier of Endicott; Maine Emergency Squad of Maine; Sunset Memorial Services of Whitney Point; Employees of Maine Endwell Central School District and Bus Garage; Union Center Christian Church of Endicott; Confluence Cat Rescue of Vestal; along with all the other arm loads of support from individual family members, friends, and loved ones. You are all remembered.
Rusty will always be remembered for his smile, his quick wit and humor, his compassion for others, happy demeanor, love of life, and fierce pride in his family and his farm. He was a truck driver for nearly 30 years, a school bus driver for 14 years with Maine Endwell Central School District Transportation, and always an aspiring beef, hog, and hay farmer since the day he moved from Avenue B, in Endwell, to his Newark Valley home in 1983. To share more in all those memories, Rusty’s family will be holding a memorial, and celebration of life, BBQ picnic and bonfire on Saturday, August 17th, 2019 at 6pm at the Newark Valley Fireman’s Field Grounds, Marean Rd, Newark Valley, Ny. All are welcome who knew Rusty and the family, and encouraged to bring a favorite memory, a funny story, or picture to share. Please wear your best John Deere or farming, semi-truck, or school bus yellow attire in honor of Rusty. Arrangements are in the care of James Shara.
