Dorothy " Dottie" M. Birmingham

Dorothy “Dottie” Marie Birmingham unexpectedly passed away August 10, 2018 from a brief illness. She was born August 15, 1936 to Leo and Florence Birmingham (both deceased) in Whitney Point, NY. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by sister Cecelia Mydlowski, sister, D. Joann Birmingham, and brother Stephen Birmingham. She is survived by sisters Norma Cushner, Mary Ann Birdsall, Joyce Buck, Fran Birmingham, and Sue (Bill) Wiese. Also survived by brothers John (Ha) Birmingham, Leo “Tony” Birmingham, and Bill (Val) Birmingham along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Dottie is a 1953 graduate of Whitney Point Central Schools, 1957 graduate of Cortland State Teacher’s College (now SUNY Cortland) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and a Graduate Certification in School Administration from SUNY Albany. She taught various grades in school and began her career in Niagara Falls, then Whitney Point Central School District and retired from the Onteora School District in Kingston NY in 1991. She was a former member of the Trail Sweepers Ski Club in Kingston NY, past president of the Onteora Teacher’s Union, Past President of the Lion’s Club in Rossmoor California and was a current member of the Binghamton Lion’s Club. She was a past President and member the Kingston NY Maennerchor and Damenchor which is a German Choral Group as well as giving generously to various charities as she firmly believed in helping others. She traveled the world and went to every continent except for Antarctica, always learning about diverse cultures and meeting the local people. She was an avid reader, enjoyed solving crossword puzzles (NY Times especially) and loved the Arts especially classical music.

Dottie will be terribly missed by her siblings and extended family. If any needed a helping hand or a word of advice she was always willing to help or share a word of wisdom. She cared deeply for her family and her many friends.

Services will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 10 AM from Sunset Memorial Services 2659 Main Street, Whitney Point NY. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and Sunset Memorial Services from 9 AM until service time at 10 AM.

Expressions of Sympathy in her memory may be made to the Lions Club International or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.  Arrangements are in the care of James Shara.
